central force

A central force is a force that depends only the magnitude of an object's position \mathbf{r}\, from some point, and is directed along the vector \mathbf{r}\, separating the object from that point. It can therefore be written in the form

\mathbf{F} = f(r) \hat\mathbf{r}\,.
