A non-linear formulation of Maxwell's theory of electromagnetism from which the electron arises as a solution to the electromagnetic field. Developed after a theory by Mie by Born and Infeld, and elaborated upon by Dirac and others. This unitarian theory was formulated to deal with various infinities that plagued the dualistic theory, namely the classical and quantum electrodynamics, as renormalization was understood at the time. The theory now finds application in string theory as a classical description of D-branes.
